PhotoStory Friday: From Bottom to Top

PhotoStory Friday
Hosted by Cecily and Emily

This is my German house.
My German house,
from the very bottom
to the very top.

45 steps.
Spiraling steps.

I love this house,
just not the 45 spiraling steps.

And this is my husband.
I asked him to move my purses
so that I could make the picture look as if it could be from
top to bottom
or
 bottom to top
(see, I was trying to be creative).
Instead, he moved one purse, and then jumped in the picture.
He's so helpful.

Halloween!

Halloween was a little different this year.  The Germans don't celebrate the holiday, however the kids that live in American neighborhoods have caught on and joined in the fun.  I think we actually had more German kids come than American kids, and I went through 4 large bags of candy!  That's never happened to us!
The best part was that the German kids all learned the song "trick-or-treat, smell my feet" song in school, so that's how we were greeted each time they came to the door.
We did get some punk kids who pointed fake guns at us when we opened the door.  We think they are the same kids who smashed all of the carved pumpkins in the neighborhood and also let all the air out of Pete's tire.

This year, the kids costumes were decided by what I could find cheapest at the thrift shop.
Noah had previously mentioned wanting to be a ninja, and I just happened to find a ninja costume.
Cost: $2

Cutest Superman ever!
Cost: $2

Blonde Dorothy.
Cost: Dress, $2
Shoes $5

Happy dressed-up kids: Priceless.

We went to our ward's trunk-or-treat on Friday night.  They were super-over-loaded with candy before trick-or-treating.

After the trunk-or-treat, there was hot chocolate, cider and donuts.  Annie really enjoyed hers.

Cooper was content with a sucker.

Ready for trick-or-treating.
Do you like Cooper's hat?  He calls it his Mickey Mouse hat.

Let the sugar high begin.

Our Garmisch Trip: Day Five

This was our last day in Garmisch, so we packed up... who am I kidding?  I packed up the van while Pete finished at the conference, and we headed to a few more sights before going home.

The Edelweiss Resort.

A few family shots.

Our first stop was the Linderhof Palace, another of Ludwig's huge masterpieces.  This is the only of his four palaces/castles to be finished before his early death.
There are actually many other small houses on the land, for others to stay in back in the King's time.  It was just too cold to visit all of them.

Apparently this guy doesn't appreciate all the tourists.

I thought this was really cool... These four statues were "holding up" part of the palace.

The front entrance.

The Linderhof Palace is best known for it's immaculate gardens.  In the spring and summer time, the gardens are in full bloom and beautiful.  We plan on going back to see them.

Super cute kids.

This waterfall looks like it goes on forever.  This is directly behind the palace, and splits the east and west gardens.

A quick walk through one side of the garden...

You can take another 20 minute tour up and around the entire garden area, but because it was so cold, we opted out of that tour.

Again, I couldn't take pictures inside the palace, so I took some from the internet.
This is the Hall Of Mirrors. The entire room is covered in mirrors, so that if you look into one, you see the reflection of the one behind, and it continues to bounce back and forth, making the room look very large, and like it goes on forever.
Familiar to any of my friends?

The Tapestry Chamber.

The Blue Cabinet.  There were also cabinets in pink, yellow and purple, that looked exactly alike.

The Dining Room.  This was the coolest room, I thought.
The king, in his later years, came to enjoy his solitude, so much that he switched his arcadian rhythms, and slept during the day and stayed awake at night, just to be away from his staff.  In this dining room, he had a special floor installed that was opened by a large crank.  The dining table sat on this floor, and when the crank was turned the floor opened and the table dropped directly into the kitchen.  The staff loaded the table with his food, cranked the wheel and sent the food upstairs.  He did all this just so he wouldn't have to see a single soul during his meal.

And this was his bedroom.  Very ornate and beautiful.  The large area in front of his bed was a visiting area, or an audience area.  Visitors (which he didn't have many of) came into this area while the King stayed in his bed.

After the palace, we took a drive to small town called Ettal that is known for it's woodwork.  We stopped in a shop and bought a few items; a nativity, a candle holder, some wood toys for the kids and a beautiful jewelry box.  That is a stop I will make every time I go to Garmisch.

Cooper's Birthday Party

Last week, we celebrated Cooper's birthday with  HUGE party....
Ok, not really.  But we still celebrated.
Our little neighbor, Joey, has a birthday one day after Cooper, so we had one celebration and invited some other members of the ward, which also happened to be dental families (there are 9 army dentists in our ward).

Cooper thought it might be fun to open his presents with his teeth this year...

Books!  His absolute favorite!

T.J., Brienz and Noah deciding which cupcake and flavor of ice cream was the best.

Kirk (a dentist) and his wife Paige.

Shane (a dentist) and his wife Kimberly ... er... her hand.

Cooper and Joey.  Doesn't Cooper look so excited?

This is how he feels about the "Happy Birthday" song.

He thought about his cupcake for about 2 seconds...

I love these pictures... it shows how truly chaotic it was in the house.

Little Addie sharing some cake with Paige.

The next morning, on his actual birthday, I let him dive into a cupcake because he never actually ate one at the party.  You can see how far he got.

And we topped the morning off with piggie pancakes, a new hit at our house.

Our Garmisch Trip: Day Four

On Thursday, we spent most of the day inside, being lazy.  Swimming at the pool, heading to the hotel lobby to watch whatever movie was playing in the kids area, and a little souvenier shopping.   Later that evening, we attended the traditional Bavarian Festival held in Garmisch.

As we were waiting for the buses to pick us up, I put the kids in front of the fireplace for a few quick shots...

The festival was held in a very large lodge, complete with traditional German decor.

The food was A. MAZ. ING.

Cooper enjoyed the music...

... and Annie and Noah seized the opportunity to run up on the stage and boogie.

There were traditional German dancers, all teenagers.  They did about 4 dances total.  I love the dresses.

Lots of drinking and cheering and toasting.  Speaking of drinking...
Pete and I ordered 5 juices- 2 orange and 3 apple- with our dinner.  We were expecting at least a glass full of each.  What we got was about 8 oz. of each drink ordered (that's less than a can of soda) for 13 Euro, or about $20.
The people sitting at our table were drinking beer, vodka and wine at 2 Euro a glass, or about $3 per glass.  To see how big the mug of beer was, see the post below.
We would save money here by drinking alcohol rather than juice and water!

This guy liked having his picture taken....
He was playing what resembled a xylophone, as quickly as he could....

... then he grabbed a partner.

These guys were awesome!  They played music using rather large whips, with what looked like a fly-fishing tie on the end.  They cracked the whips to the beat of the song playing.

We were all told to sit in our chairs for safety, however, there was one woman who decided to was too close to the whips, stood up and was smacked in the forehead by another whip.
She survived.  She was drinking... it didn't hurt that much.

I'm totally getting one of these outfits for Pete.

Then all the kids headed up to the stage to dance with Major General Czerw (pronounced Surf), the head of the Army DENTAC.  This guy is the top-dog dentist in the army, and higher than anyone in the nation.

Cooper was excited....

... but it quickly turned to worry...

...Noah enjoyed the whole thing.

Major General Czerw grabbed Noah at the end of the Chicken dance and began dancing around with him.  He picked him up and threw him in the air, spun him around....

...made some awesome chicken hands...

... and boogied.

Then he grabbed Annie and did the same thing.  She wasn't quite as excited, although most of that was because she was exhausted.  By this point, she had been asking for an hour to go back to the hotel so she could sleep.

Again, Cooper looks thrilled beyond belief.

The night ended with the boys coming back on the stage for one final dance.  This was a dance representing a day in the life of a German lumberman.  They chopped logs....

... drank a bit....

... which led to this:
